Red kites at Nant yr Arian

Visited Bwlch Nant Yr Arian to see the red kites and to hopefully get some good photos. It has a stunning lake surrounded by conifer forests and the kites are fed daily so it is possible to see them in great numbers swooping down. The red kite was quite a rare bird a few years ago but now they have seen a huge increase in numbers and grace the skies everywhere.

I used to draw and paint birds a lot in the past and so I thought I'd try some kites but only their silhouettes on watery wet in wet backgrounds. I mostly used Daniel Smiths primatek paints for this as they have lovely granulation effects, sometimes. Sugilite genuine, a purplish colour, has mica in it and so sparkles in the light. Yum!

Recently I got a visitor to my garden. I put some scraps out and captured this buzzard.

Happy 2013 to everyone.
